About me

Olga Galkina

Psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Tallinn, MA in Psychology, IPA candidate.

I offer psychological help to adults and to adolescents from the age of 16 — in person at my consulting room in Tallinn and online, in Russian and English. My work rests on the psychoanalytic approach, in which attention is given not only to a particular symptom or problem, but to you as a whole — to your history and to your inner world.

I hold to high standards of professional ethics. I attend supervision with IPA members and am in personal analysis on a regular basis.

The attention here is on work in depth — it is directed at the core of the psyche, at the causes, rather than at the removal of a symptom, which comes about as a by-product of our work.

What I work with

Areas of work

Individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis: anxiety, burnout, depressive states, relationships and life crises. This list is not exhaustive — if you do not find your situation here, it does not mean you cannot bring it. Write to me and we will discuss it.

Approach

How a psychoanalytic session works

This is a method that works in depth, directed at exploring a person's inner world and the unconscious processes that are not obvious to us, yet shape our feelings, our relationships and our choices.

The principal instrument of our work is the word — in other words, the method of free association. Here you may say whatever comes into your mind: your thoughts, your feelings, your dreams. It is not an easy task, and we learn it together, little by little.

We can discuss all of your feelings, including those that may arise towards me within our process. It is precisely this that makes the work alive and allows us to see what usually remains invisible.

How we work

How we begin

As a rule, I suggest beginning with three assessment meetings.

Three assessment meetings

In these I can come to know you better and understand your situation and your state, while you can get a feeling for how this way of working is for you and whether you are comfortable with me.

Then the decision is yours

For some, this consultative work turns out to be enough. Others come to see that they want and need work of greater depth — regular meetings once a week or more often, in the form of psychotherapy.

Terms discussed in person

The format, the regularity and the practical arrangements are things we talk through in our meeting — so that they are clear and suit you.

Session format

In person in Tallinn and online

Both formats are equal in the depth of work they allow. The choice usually comes down to what is more convenient and more sustainable for your schedule.

FAQ

What people ask before starting

What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychotherapist and a psychoanalyst?

Psychology is the underlying degree; psychotherapist and psychoanalyst are specialisations built on top of it, each with its own years of training, personal therapy and supervision. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy differs not in what is talked about but in depth: we work towards the causes rather than towards the quick removal of a symptom.

How long is a session and how is the schedule arranged?

An assessment consultation lasts 60 minutes; a regular session lasts 50 minutes. We begin with three assessment meetings, and if we decide to continue we fix a standing day and time, usually once a week. Where deeper work is needed the meetings become more frequent; that shift is discussed separately.

How should I prepare for the first consultation?

There is nothing to prepare — no list of topics, no wording worked out in advance. It is enough to come and begin with whatever is troubling you today. If you feel anxious before the first meeting, you can say so out loud: it is an ordinary feeling and a good place to start.
